Block puzzles look simple: drag a shape onto the board, fill a row or column, watch it clear. But the difference between a score of 2,000 and 20,000 usually comes down to a few habits. Here are seven that work in Brickwise and most other block puzzles.
1. Look at all three pieces before you place one
It’s tempting to place the first piece you see. Instead, look at all the pieces you’ve been given and ask: where will each one fit? Sometimes the right order is the opposite of the order on screen.
2. Keep the center of the board open
Big pieces, like the 3×3 square and long 1×5 lines, need a lot of room. If you fill the middle early, those pieces have nowhere to go. Build along the edges first and keep a clear space in the center for as long as you can.
3. Don’t leave single holes
A single empty square surrounded by blocks is very hard to fill. Only the tiny 1×1 piece fits there, and it might not come for a long time. Before you drop a piece, check that it won’t leave a lonely gap behind.
4. Set up two lines at once
Clearing one line is good. Clearing two or three at the same time is much better, because most block puzzles give bonus points for multi-line clears. Try to fill two rows (or a row and a column) almost to the end, then finish both with one piece.
5. Keep your combo going
In Brickwise, every clear adds to a combo streak, and each step of the streak multiplies your line bonus. The streak forgives you a little: it only breaks after three moves in a row with no clear. So if you can, keep one “almost full” line on the board, ready to finish when your streak is about to run out.
6. Plan for the worst piece
Always ask yourself: if I get the big square next, where will it go? If the answer is “nowhere”, make space now while you still can. Players who survive the longest are the ones who always keep a spot ready for the awkward pieces.
7. Slow down
There’s no timer in Brickwise, so there’s no reason to rush. Take a breath before each move. A calm, slow game almost always beats a fast, panicked one.
